The idea of constructing the “Indonesia Indah” Mini Park TMII came with Siti Hartinah Suharto, fondly known as Mrs. Tien Suharto. The idea emerged through the contents of President Soeharto’s speech in 1971. It was officially launched in 1975. The park has some regional Pavilions which consist of 26 exclusive replicas of traditional houses of chieftains found throughout the Indonesian archipelago from Java, Papua, Sulawesi, Aceh, and Kalimantan. These pavilions display the history, arts and crafts, and traditions of each of the provinces. Built for education and family fun, Taman Mini has large areas for family recreation, several florae and fauna parks, various museums, performing theatres, an Imax theatre, and accommodation facilities. TMII is a tourist attraction Tourists come to TMII to view the exceptional breadth and full range of regional architecture in the Indonesian archipelago, where the pavilion presents at least three typical examples of each regional style. The “Teater Tanah Airku” is the first theatre in Indonesia equipped with state-of-the-art technology. It is a blend of typical Indonesian and international aesthetics. It is located on the south side of the TMII. The building consists of two floors with an area of 5,500 square meters on the edge of an artificial lake that merges and forms a circle of fresh water. The freshwater world at TMII is the largest and second most complete freshwater park in the world and the largest in Asia. It has 6,000 animals of 126 species from various parts of Indonesia and other parts of the world. 7. Taman Mini is Government’s Owned On April 7th, 2021, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah TMII cultural park in East Jakarta was taken over by the government. The move took over the park from Harapan Kita Foundation, a foundation set up by the family of former president Soeharto. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo signed a presidential regulation on March 31 2021 officially mandating the takeover. The regulation also stipulates a requirement for the government to establish a team that would oversee the management and transition for three months. The government assured its citizens that it will remain committed toTMII in preserving the national heritage and serving as an education facility. It also needed to optimize it to be a cultural theme park under international standards. 8. Children will enjoy the Istana Anak Anak Indonesia Castle The Indonesian Children’s Palace abbreviated as IAAI was inaugurated on April 20th,1986 by president Soeharto. It is a castle-shaped building similar to a Cinderella fairy tale. This palace can be a place for children to learn and play. The main building of the palace is named Graha Widya Tama, it consists of four floors with an open space on the second floor. This building has two wings and a tower rising high into the sky symbolizing the togetherness of boys and girls in achieving high performance. TMII Captures the Cultures of 26 Indonesian Provinces Each Indonesian province maintains its own unique and distinct culture, TMII has built a model of each of the houses from Indonesian provinces with the collections of “Rumah adat” as an example of Indonesian vernacular architecture, clothing, dances, and traditions. Rumah adat is a traditional house built in any of the vernacular architecture styles of Indonesia, collectively belonging to Austronesian architecture. The traditional houses and settlements of the several hundreds of ethnic groups of Indonesia are extremely varied and all have their specific history. TMII reconstructed the homes of the various provinces and created a realistic model of the environment and shelters of the various people of Indonesia. A visit there was always an occasion, filled with excitement, especially as young school children. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, nearly all elementary schools in Jakarta would arrange study tours to this theme park-slash-open-air museum, which is located in East Jakarta. The theme park showcased life-sized pavilions replicating traditional houses for each province in Indonesia. TMII laid a foundation for understanding Indonesia, especially in a cultural context, for many Indonesians at their most impressionable age. It was glorious and idyllic. But with tax debts reportedly racking up, along with increasing operational costs and losses of between Rp 40 billion US$ million and Rp 50 billion a year, the question is Does TMII serve its initial function of cultural conservation, or is it merely a showpiece of the past, instilled with New Order propaganda? How it started, how it's going TMII was established at the behest of former president Soeharto under the New Order regime. This isn’t a historical secret. But what has been under wraps is the fact that TMII suffered massive losses for 44 years while being managed by the Harapan Kita Foundation, led by the Soeharto family. This discovery came from a lawsuit filed by a Singapore-based firm Mitora Pte Ltd against five of Soeharto’s for their unpaid obligations. The bill aimed to confiscate the Soeharto family's belongings, including 2 hectares of the 145 ha TMII area. "There was political heat during that time, as people were questioning the significance of this state-funded megaproject over a park," JJ Rizal, a historian and founder of history books publisher Komunitas Bambu told The Jakarta Post. So, not only was TMII suspected to have been built to serve as the family’s personal cash cow, its construction came at the expense of local residents. Roughly 300 houses were razed to make way for the project, which was initiated by Soeharto's wife, Tien Soeharto. The inspiration reportedly came from her visit to Disneyland in the United States and a park with a similar theme in Bangkok. The financial backing was not endorsed by many. Travel journalist Cristian Rahadiansyah told the Post "Tien Soeharto collected the capital by way of crowdfunding. She persuaded each of Indonesia's provincial governors to turn her idea into reality." Each pavilion that represents a province's cultural identity was taken care of by the local governors. At the height of the family’s powers, no one said “no” to a Soeharto family member. Yet in the context of tourism, TMII has secured a prominent spot. "It was the first tourist attraction with Indonesian identity as the overarching theme," Cristian added. The face of Indonesia Cristian, 41, who grew up during Soeharto's three-decade presidency, said he had been spoon-fed to see Indonesia with a specific outlook. "TMII was only a minuscule part of the whole New Order propaganda, and the idea kept being implanted through television, books, even education curriculums," he said.
